The Renewed Castle Garden Bazaar Was Handed Over

Back

The renewed parts of the Castle Garden Bazaar were handed over at the beginning of April. The reconstruction of the building, which had been empty for the past decades, started in February 2013. The renewal of the bazaar is to be continued: its new parts are to be built, and the reconstruction is to be finished by the end of August.

The renewed parts of the Castle Garden Bazaar were handed over on the 3rd April 2014 by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The reconstructions started in February 2013; in the confines of the project the parts built by architect Miklós Ybl were renewed, and the statues and murals restored. The reconstructions of the interior of the bazaar and the construction of its new parts are to be finished yet; but when they’re ready, the 1st district of Budapest gets a whole new face. Thanks to the reconstruction the building complex, which had been abandoned for a long time, can become one of the capital’s spectacles and a popular community space again.

The Next Part Is to Be Ready by the End of August
After finishing the reconstruction of the Castle Garden Bazaar (which is expected to be ready by 28th August) the whole Buda Castle is to be renewed, and the neighborhood, such as Lánchíd utca also will be rebuilt. The construction of the Neo-Renaissance style bazaar started in 1875, according to the plans of architect Miklós Ybl, and it was opened in 1883. First it was home for several shops, and later a painting school and artist studios were here. In the 1960-80s the Youth Park of Buda operated here, where several concerts were held. In 1984 the building was closed due to its inappropriate state. The reconstructions started 30 years later, and cost HUF 6.5 billion.

The Bazaar and the Buda Castle Are to Be Connected
Three exhibitions were opened in the old/new Castle Garden Bazaar: one of them is about the work of architect Miklós Ybl, the second one displays the reconstruction of the bazaar and the third one displays the objects that were found at the site during the constructions. In the second part of the project the bazaar and the Buda Castle are to be connected: a moving pavement and a narrow corridor will be built, and an underground garage and an underground cultural facility are also to be constructed.
