Running Track on Margaret Island is to Be Renewed

Back

Budapest residents could also state their opinions on how the running track on Margaret Island should be renewed. Up till March the Mayor’s Office received more than 1500 filled surveys: most residents would like the track to be widened, lit and surveyed by security cameras.

The Town Planning Department of the Mayor’s Office invited Budapest residents to state their opinions on how the running track on Margaret Island should be renewed and what other sport facilities should be built on the island. The survey could be filled up till March: the office got more than 1500 answers. According to the responses the residents are proud of the island and its facilities, and enjoy spending their time there taking part in sport or other outdoor activities.

The Running Track is to be Lit and Surveyed by Security Cameras
Most respondents would like to see sport and environmental protection related developments on the island. Some of them stated that they’d like to have a volleyball field, a basketball field, bike lanes and bike racks there. According to the plans several cycling related developments are to be realized: e. g. one of the stations of bicycle sharing system BuBi is to be placed here, at the bus stop at the sports pool. The self-government of Budapest is also planning to renew the running track: it is to be widened, based with concrete, lit and surveyed by security cameras. Besides all these the self-government would like to provide an opportunity for the runners to use the locker rooms, the showers and the lockers of the Margaret Island Athletics Center.

A New Outdoor Training Park is to Be Built on the Island
The protection of the running track also needs to be solved, ensuring that pedestrians, dog walkers and people with strollers don’t cross it disturbing the runners. Those who filled the survey also would like to be able to measure the distance easily when running: this could be provided by kilometer signs painted on the ground. An outdoor training park, buffets and resting areas are also planned to be built on the island.
