Back

The renewed Castle Garden Bazaar is to be inaugurated in April 2014. The reconstruction of the monument started in the fall of 2012, and the aim was to keep the building's characteristics, while creating a new, modern cultural space. The first part of the reconstruction is to be ready by March; the parts of the building planned by architect Miklós Ybl are going to be renewed.

According to the plans the renewed Castle Garden Bazaar is going to be inaugurated on the 3rd April 2014 by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The reconstruction of the building of the former bazaar started in the fall of 2012: within the confines of the first part of the constructions the parts of the building planned by architect Miklós Ybl are going to be renewed; the work is to be ready by March. This will be followed by building the planned new parts of the building; and the surroundings will be renewed also, like Lánchíd utca running in front of the monument. A harbor and a parking lot will also be built. The aim of the constructions is to keep the building's characteristics, and creating a new, modern cultural space at the same time. On the day of the inauguration of the reconstructed monument, 3 exhibitions will be opened in the building: the first displays the life and work of architect Miklós Ybl, the second the reconstruction of the bazaar and the third the objects that were found at the site during the reconstruction.

The Reconstruction Started after 30 Years

The bazaar built in Neo-Renaissance style is a World Heritage Site. It was built between 1875 and 1883, and originally was home for shops, and later for a vocational training centre, a painting school, and several painters and sculptors also had their workshops here. During the World War II the building was seriously damaged. In the1960-80s the Youth Park of Buda operated here, where and a lot of concerts were held. The monument was closed in 1981 due to its inappropriate state. The decision about its reconstruction was only made 30 years later. The project cost HUF 6.5 billion. The aim is to make the facility be able to maintain itself financially.

The Second Part Is about Connecting the Bazaar with the Castle

The aim of the second part of the reconstruction is to create a connection between the bazaar and the Buda Castle. Within the confines of the second part a moving pavement will be built to connect the Castle with the bank of the Danube. A narrow corridor is also to be built to make it easier for the visitors to walk around the Castle. A new underground garage and an underground cultural space is also to be built.
