According to the plans the new gymnastics and cycling centre of Budapest, the rebuilt Millenáris Velodrom will be inaugurated in 3 years. The facility is to be built at the territory of the National Olimpic Centre, in a sport park near the Puskás Ferenc Stadium. The building will be built by the plans of Váncza Művek Contructions, as it was revealed on the 22nd January 2014 in the House of Sports. The winning plans were chosen from 27 applications. Government Commissioner responsible for the development of sport facilities László Vígh stated that the constructions are to be started at the beginning of next year. The commission chose from the applications that kept the old buildings and tried to use them keeping their original functions.
Two Bicycle Tracks Are to Be Built in the Centre
According to the plans the new building will be home for a 250-meter covered bicycle track appropriate for world championships, a BMX training track and a gymnastics centre, that will be built at the center of the facility. The aim is to keep the original characteristics of the Millenáris Velodrom, while building a modern sport centre. The facility has always been one of the centers of the Hungarian sport: several cycling, boxing, gymnastics, ice hockey, racing and athletics championships have been held here. But the current state of the building is inappropriate: the walls got wet, the bleachers and the tracks are worn out; these need to be renewed as well.
