History of Gellért Baths
The building of Gellért Baths built in Secession style is located in the 11th district of Budapest. Its ancestor was built in the 13th century, and during the Turkish era a bath operated here as well. The city of Buda became the owner of the facility in 1718. In 1894 it was knocked down; the current building was built in 1912-18, according to the plans of architects Ármin Hegedűs, Artúr Sebestyén and Izidor Sterk. At the time the bath used to have a hospital as well and it was the most modern bath of Europe. In 1926-27 a wave pool, and in 1934 a Jacuzzi was built. Between the two world wars Gellért Baths had some renowned guests, like Dutch Queen Julianna, Rabindranath Tagore, Yehudi Menuhin or Richard Nixon. During the World War II the building suffered severe damages; later it was reconstructed, and modernized in 1980. The walls of the baths are covered with Zsolnay porcelain. The bath has an indoor swimming pool, an outdoor wave pool, an outdoor thermal pool and an outdoor sauna.
