History of Batthyány tér
Batthyány tér is one of the most important traffic junctions of Buda, it is located in the 1st district, in Víziváros. The square located at the banks of the Danube got its name after former Prime Minister Lajos Batthyány, whose statue stands on the square. It got its current name in 1905; before it was called Oberer Markt (Felső piac tér) and Bombenplatz (Bomba tér). Thanks to its closeness to the harbor and the highway the area was an important center in the Turkish era as well. In 1872 as a part of the flood defense the level of the area was heightened, thus the old buildings surrounding the square now can be approached by stairs. Until 1960 one of the bridge heads of Kossuth Bridge and a train terminal were here. The Batthyány tér station of the Metro Line 2 was opened in 1972. After the constructions the buildings damaged in the World War II were reconstructed, and a glass building was erected at the center of the square, that operates as the entrance of the metro and the local railway station. Several monuments are surrounding the square, such as the Vásárcsarnok (Market Hall) or the abbey and church of the Sisters of Saint Elizabeth.
