The renovation of Népliget (People’s Park) is to begin next year. The purpose of the investment is to provide opportunity for the locals to practice sports such as running or other outdoor activities in the park safely. To make it safe the park will be surrounded with a fence, will be closed for the nights and also will be guarded by security non-stop. The football club Fradi’s training centre located at Népliget can also be renewed beginning by 2015; a new handball, a basketball and a hockey field is to be built there. For the renewal of the park Hungary can use EU resources, and the costs of the development of the training centre will be covered by the Hungarian state, the capital and the district – the rates of the contribution are not known yet.
Népliget is the Biggest Park in Budapest
The 129-ha Népliget located in the 10th district is the biggest park in Budapest. It was built in the 1860s; the area previously functioned as a sand mine and a dump. Several types of trees – e. g. planes, ashes, maples and limes – were planted here; and it reached its current size in 1942. Besides the tree- and bush-lined areas there are several promenades, statues and monuments in the park. It’s popular among runners and dog-walkers as well. Several entertainment facilities used to stand here, such as a movie theater, a circus, a dodgem track, a carousel, a shooting gallery, a rollercoaster, restaurants, playgrounds and a puppet theater. Between 1930 and 1980 motor and car races were held here. The park was renovated in 1930-35.
The Planetárium is Also Operating Here
After the World War II the entertaining facilities were knocked down except the puppet theatre, but it didn’t function after 1989 either, and in 2011 it burned down. The Centenáriumi Park with its statues is also located here, it was built in 1973. The park is home for the Planetarium built in 1977 as well, where mostly astronomy shows are held. Between 1991 and 2008 a popular night club, E-Klub was operating here, in its building currently an exhibition called Invisible Exhibition can be visited, which helps the visitors get to know the world of the blind.
