The renewal and modernizing of Madách tér can be started at the beginning of October and finished in a few months. The 85-year-old ducting will be replaced, the parking lot knocked down, and the square rebuilt into a real community place. Green areas, a fountain, benches, bike racks will be constructed and new trees will be planted there. The reconstruction will cost an estimated HUF 150-200 million.

The Winning Construction Plan Was Chosen by the Locals

The self-government of the 7th district got 36 plans for the renewal of the square, and the residents of Budapest chose the winner. The plans got 1325 votes in total, from which 808 votes were got by the winner, Sára Borbála Magyar’s, Anna Hertel’s and Minh Duc Nguyen’s work. But finally the government decided not to use only the winning plan, but to integrate the appropriate elements of the others into the final project as well.

A Light Stripe Will Lead to the Nearby Street

The most spectacular element of the square will be a fountain, from where a light stripe will lead to the nearby street, Madách Imre utca. Here a large metal frame will be erected, which will be used for outdoor exhibitions. The project can be finished in a few months, but the self-government of the district hasn’t announced the exact date yet. The buildings of the square were erected in 1937, and they are national monuments. The building of Örkény Theatre (the former Madách Kamara) is located here with a statue (Ferenc Medgyessy’s Dancing Woman) standing in front of it.
