History of the Móricz Zsigmond körtér

Móricz Zsigmond körtér located in the 11th district is an important traffic junction of Buda. From 1898 a tram crossed the square, which took the passengers to Kelenföld railway station. At the beginning of the 20th century only one building, an inn stood here, but the area was built in as the neighborhood developed. It got its current name in 1945, previously it was called Horthy Miklós körtér. The group statue depicting Saint Emeric created by sculptor Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl standing in the middle of the square was erected in 1930.

The “Mushroom” Was Built in 1942

The traffic on the current Villányi út and on Karinthy Frigyes út started in 1928 and in 1937. The tram tracks were connected at the middle of the square, where the statue stands now. The Gomba was built in 1942, and originally functioned as the terminal of the suburban train. The connected tram tracks surrounding the monument were removed in 2002. One of the stations of the metro line 4 to be opened in March is on the square: its entrance has already been built. The square is very busy: there are the terminals of trams no. 6 and 61 and of 8 bus lines, and another 5 tram and 4 bus lines cross it.
