The results of the tender made for architects to create plans for the new museums to be erected in the City Park in Budapest are expected by the end of 2014. The organizers are currently waiting for the construction plans within the confines of the Liget Budapest Project. The 5 new museum buildings are to be erected at the edges of the park and replacing some old ones that are to be knocked down. The green areas of the park are to be renewed, and their size will also be larger. The project is currently the biggest museum development program in Europe, so it is expected to highly increase the prestige of the country. The total prize of the tender is EUR 870 thousand (HUF 270 million). Five new museums are to be built in the park: the Ethnographic Museum, the House of Hungarian Music, the New National Gallery – Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art and the twin buildings of the PhotoMuseum and the Hungarian Museum of Architecture.

Where Will the New Buildings Be Built?

The Ethnographic Museum will be located on the Ötvenhatosok tere, at its Ajtósi Dürer sor side, and the House of Hungarian Music is to be built replacing the old Hungexpo offices. The New National Gallery – Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art will be located behind the Petőfi Csarnok, replacing the current sport fields. The Hungarian Museum of Architecture and the PhotoMuseum will be built side by side, at the joint of Dózsa György út and Városligeti fasor. The sport fields will be relocated, and thanks to the knocking down of the Petőfi Csarnok the Nagyrét (“Large Field”) will be actually a large field again, after 130 years. The place of the future Children and Youth Knowledge and Entertainment Center is yet to be decided. An underground garage is to be built under Ötvenhatosok tere, and a green area will replace the current parking spaces. The construction is to be begun in 2016 and to be finished in 2018. The total cost of the 5 new buildings is HUF 75 billion. Several worldwide-known architects are interested in the tender, like Bolle Tham and Martin Videgård from Sweden and Erik Nobel from Denmark. The latter already spent some time in the City Park gathering influences.
