Budapest was chosen the second best city of the world by the readers of an US travel magazine. The Hungarian capital was only taken over by the Mexican city San Miguel de Allende. The tourists visiting Budapest are most impressed by the city’s famous buildings, the entertainment opportunities and the fine foods.
According to the recently published list of US travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler Budapest is the second best city of the world after the Mexican San Miguel de Allende – the Hungarian capital had a tie for the second place with the Italian Florence. The owners of the first two places are followed by the Austrian Salzburg, Vienna, Rome, the Italian Siena and the Canadian Québec. Such popular travel destinations like Paris or Barcelona could only get the 22nd and the 24th place.

Foreign tourists mainly like Budapest, because it has a special atmosphere, not like any other European capitals’. They are impressed by its famous old buildings, the great numbers of monuments, the delicious foods and the wide range of entertainment opportunities. They like the monumental statues on Hősök tere (Heroes’ Square), the view they can enjoy from the Citadel, the Budapest Castle Hill Funicular or the Christmas fair on Vörösmarty tér. According to the data of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office the number of the nights tourists spent in Hungary increased by 8.5 percent to 11.3 million last year.
