Debrecen Is One of the Most Dynamically Developing Hungarian Cities

The future traffic centre can make the life of the country’s second biggest and most populated city even more vivid. Debrecen is the most remarkable city of the Transtisza region, the 38 percent of Hajdú-Bihar County lives here. It’s one of Hungary’s most dynamically developing countries, and is usually referred to as “the Calvinist Rome”. Its first written reference is from the 13th century. During its history the city burned down to its ashes several times, but by the 16th century it became the cultural and intellectual center of the region. Some of the most renowned Hungarian poets and writers started their careers here, just as Endre Ady, Gyula Krúdy or Árpád Tóth. Debrecen is a traditional university city, besides the famous Calvinist College of Debrecen founded in 1538 (now the University of Debrecen), the Kölcsey Ferenc Calvinist College and the Debrecen Reformed Theological University are also operating here.
